Previously this was a service being provided through BCC Youth & Community but due to the increasing ages of the members, and the remit of the Youth Service, this was not able to continue for those over the chronological age of 25 years. Thirty young adults were then left with no provision. This led to the establishment of a new charity, Social Link, to cater for their needs.
Social Link continues to run following the same policies and procedures as previously, using the same qualified and DBS checked staff, overseen by a committee of trustees and other professionals; and has gained charitable status. Without this service the young adults with special needs would be likely to experience greater social isolation and lack of development, marginalisation within their communities, greater dependency on ageing parents and other carers, lack of choices and poor leisure opportunities. This would be in addition to the problems experienced by the average young adult. |
